This year marks a significant milestone for Financial Symmetry: Chad Smith’s 25th anniversary with the firm. From our very first intern to one of our most trusted advisors, Chad’s contributions have helped shape the firm into what it is today—serving nearly 850 clients and managing $1.2 billion in assets. His dedication, leadership, and care for both clients and colleagues are felt in every corner of our organization.
A Career Built on Purpose and Progress
Chad’s journey with Financial Symmetry began as a college student at North Carolina State University, where he earned his degree in finance and business management. He joined the firm as its first intern, a role that laid the foundation for a long and impactful career in financial planning.
After graduating, Chad came on board full-time as a Financial Planning Associate. He went on to earn his Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) designation and became the second advisor at Financial Symmetry. Over the years, his work has remained rooted in helping individuals and families make thoughtful, informed decisions about their financial futures.
A Recognized Voice in Financial Education
In addition to his client work, Chad has led the Financial Symmetry podcast, which now features over 240 episodes and continues to be a valuable resource for those navigating complex financial topics. His ability to explain strategies with clarity and care has helped countless listeners feel more confident in their financial decisions.
Chad specializes in working with individuals nearing retirement, helping them identify tax-saving opportunities unique to their situation. He also works closely with employees and executives at leading Triangle-area technology companies—including SAS, Red Hat, Lenovo, and Cisco—providing guidance on optimizing corporate benefit programs and planning for long-term goals.
Rooted in Family and Community
Beyond his professional achievements, Chad is deeply committed to his family and community. He enjoys spending quality time with his wife and two daughters, whether vacationing at the Carolina Coast or Disney, participating in their YGuides tribe, or simply enjoying life at home with the family pup.
He also serves as a youth sports coach and is actively involved at Hope Community Church in Apex, NC, where he contributes his time and energy in meaningful ways. Each year, he looks forward to an annual golf trip (complete with a fun trophy), staying connected with friends, and his love for the game.
