Your Financial Planning Checklist for 2026

Angela Keeley-White

The beginning of a new year offers a valuable opportunity to take a step back and check in on your finances. Taking a quick inventory of where things stand now can help you feel more organized and prepared as the year unfolds, making it easier to stay on track with your financial plan. Not sure where to begin? This start-of-the-year financial planning checklist is meant to help you focus on the areas that matter most and keep your financial decisions aligned with your goals.

Important Considerations for the Beginning of the Year

  • Think about what the year ahead may bring. Major life changes, such as relocating, changing jobs, welcoming a new family member, or preparing for retirement, can greatly impact your finances, and planning ahead can make those transitions smoother.
  • Evaluate your savings strategy. Make sure your emergency fund, short-term savings, and longer-term goals are still receiving the attention they need.
  • Review your cash flow. Looking at last year’s income and spending can help you identify patterns and make adjustments that support your priorities.
  • Take time to review your employee benefits. Contributions to retirement plans and health savings accounts can add up quickly when used effectively.
  • Organize tax-related paperwork. Getting everything in order early can help reduce stress during tax season.
  • Check in on your estate planning documents. If you’ve had changes in your personal or financial life, it may be time to update your estate planning paperwork to keep everything current.
  • Review your insurance coverage. Health, life, and other policies should continue to reflect your needs and provide the appropriate protection.

Looking Ahead

Even small updates can make a meaningful difference over time. By addressing these key areas early in the year, you can create a strong foundation for the months ahead. Download this free financial planning checklist, and please don’t hesitate to contact us to learn how we can help support your financial goals in 2026.
